Manchester City are believed to be making preparations to muster up £100 million to land Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

The Red Devils' marksman's future has been the subject of intense speculation in the recent past, with an alleged fall-out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson prompting suggestions that the England international could be headed in the direction that David Beckham went seven years ago.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are thought to be interested in a move for the 24-year-old, but The Mirror claims that City are plotting to make a £50m move for the player and use the remaining £50m to lure him with cushy wages.

It is said that the club would look to tie down the former Everton hitman on a four-year deal, which would put his earnings at about £13m-a-year - which would make him the Premier League's highest earner.

For his part, Rooney is thought to be in favour of a move across the great Manchester divide.
